On 12 and 13 October 2026, TU Wien’s Department of International Relations and Global Affairs hosted senior delegations from two innovative EULiST partner universities: LUT University (Finland) and Jönköping University (Sweden), alongside the EULiST Secretary General. The two-day visit focused on advancing research cooperation, driving innovation, and exploring ideas for future linked ecosystems.
Strategic Dialogues and Innovation Transfer
The high-level delegations were led by LUT Rector Juha-Matti Saksa and JU Rector Måns Svensson, accompanied by Kerstin Johansen and EULiST Secretary General Natia Gamkrelidze. The primary aim was to translate the broader EULiST alliance framework into concrete, institution-level cooperation.
The guests were welcomed by Markus Schweiger (Head of International Relations and Global Affairs) and Chris Schubert (EULiST Local Coordinator at TU Wien). Strategic alignment was a core focus during talks with TU Wien Rector Jens Schneider, where the leadership discussed the long-term positioning of the alliance.
Innovation and transfer mechanisms were highlighted by Peter Ertl, who presented TU Wien’s approach to technology transfer—ranging from patent and licence management to the Spinoff Factory. The participants also explored practical co-creation models during a visit to the TU Wien Transformer space and a lab tour led by Christian Jordan in process and chemical engineering.

Data-Driven Matchmaking: The Competence Landscape
A key highlight of the visit was the presentation of TU Wien’s new Knowledge Spheres by Elisabeth Schludermann (Senior Adviser for Research and Head of Research Management and Science Support). This data-driven graph maps the university’s research competencies across approximately 10,000 projects and 23,000 publications, offering a dynamic view of core strengths, unique selling propositions (USPs), and emerging research fields.
Prior to the meeting, a joint LUT–TU Wien matching exercise leveraged this tool to identify shared research priorities, leading to focused bilateral discussions between key researchers:
-
Human-centred software engineering: Antti Knutas – Allan Hanbury
-
Water quality and separation technologies: Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri – Jörg Krampe
-
Energy transitions and energy economics: Jero Ahola, Jenny Rinkinen – Sebastian Zwickl-Bernhard
-
Thermal and process engineering: Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, Tero Tynjälä – Michael Harasek
-
Robotics and mechatronics: Henrik Ebel – Ernst Csencsics
Synergies across European Alliances
The vision for the Europa Campus Hainburg was presented by Dean Marko Mihovilovic during his introduction of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry. The campus holds significant potential for bringing together two European University Alliances—EULiST and E³UDRES²—by supporting shared research lab infrastructure and virtual environments.
Looking Ahead
The visit concluded with a round-table discussion chaired by Markus Schweiger. Participants unanimously declared the two-day gathering a resounding success that deepened individual research collaborations and strengthened shared tools and resources within EULiST.
